The Beagle
Beagles are loyal companions with a happy-go-lucky personality that make great family dogs. They are also excellent hunting dogs that love to follow their nose.
Beagles have been bred to work in packs and will often do better with other canine family members. They are active and energetic dogs and can get themselves into trouble if left to entertain themselves. They don’t respond well to harsh treatment, so a positive and fun-based training approach is important.
On leash walks are a must! Beagles are scent hounds, and their nose can easily lead them astray as they follow an interesting scent. While on leash or in safely enclosed areas giving your Beagle time to use their nose to explore is an important activity that will enrich their life.
Beagles have a smooth, dense coat that gets thicker in the winter. They shed moderately throughout the year but in the spring, they will shed more heavily. Weekly brushing can help remove loose hair and have him looking and feeling his best. Beagles don’t need regular bathes, only as needed if they get dirty. Regular nail trims or grinds are essential to keep the paws comfortable for this active breed.
