A special type of maize; Zea mays everta is used to make popcorn. This particular corn variety has small ears and kernels that burst when exposed to dry heat.
Popcorn as a food staple and healthy treat has a long history dating back to approximately 5600 years. There’s evidence of popcorn in Peru, Mexico and Guatemala and other areas within central and south America.
Evidence has also been found that shows Pueblo Native Americans consumed popcorn in their daily lives as far back as 1000 years ago. French explorers observed Iroquois Natives in the Great Lakes region making popcorn. As people moved around North America, many people adopted popcorn as a popular and healthy snack.
