Skunk Tips
Skunks are on the move. February into March is breeding season so they will be on the hunt for food and mates. They are nocturnal so check your yard before letting your dog outside for potty breaks at night or early morning.
When your dog gets sprayed by a skunk, the pungent odor can be overwhelming.
To effectively wash your dog and get rid of the smell, there are a few tips you can follow.
First, DO NOT GET YOUR DOG WET! Because the substance is an oil, it cannot be washed away with a simple water bath, and the skunk smell may even become worse if the pet gets wet. You’ll want to mix up a solution that will neutralize the odor. Be sure to wear gloves and work the solution into your dog’s fur, avoiding their eyes and ears.
Skunk Spray Neutralizer Recipe
- 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- Teaspoon of liquid detergent
Let this solution set for 15-20 minutes or as long as you pet will allow. Time will allow the oils to break down. To learn about the Chemistry of Skunk Spray watch this episode of Gross Science by Nova.
Next, rinse your dog thoroughly with water and wash with your favorite shampoo. Rinse thoroughly then dry your dog with a towel and allow him to air dry.
It’s also a good idea to wash your dog’s collar, leash, and any other items that may have come into contact with the skunk spray using the same solution. Lastly, consider consulting your vet if your dog shows signs of irritation or discomfort after being sprayed by a skunk.
