The Bloodhound
The Bloodhound is a large hound that originated in France. It has a hardy build, short fur, long ears, wrinkly skin and an incredibly powerful sense of smell. This breed is highly intelligent and paired with their excellent tracking skills they are often used in law enforcement and search and rescue.
They have an easy-going temperament and can make good family dogs but their strong desire to follow a scent can lead them astray and make them a challenge to train.
Due to their wrinkly skin care and long, droopy ears extra care must be taken to keep them clean and healthy. Like other deep-chested dogs Bloodhounds can be susceptible to bloat. It’s important for owners to be aware of the symptoms of this life-threatening condition.
The Bloodhounds short coat sheds twice per year but weekly brushes are needed to promote new hair growth and distribute the natural skin oils. Regular baths can keep your Bloodhound smelling fresh. Our self-service dog wash offers the perfect opportunity to wash your bloodhound with our raised tub, fully stocked variety of shampoos and conditioner, a forced air dryer, apron to keep you dry, and staff to clean up after you.
Although Bloodhounds can be known for being lazy in truth, they are active dogs that have the endurance to follow a scent for many miles. Regular exercise and opportunities to use their nose will help keep them mentally and physically fit. Our park walk service makes a great addition to add to any active guests overnight boarding reservation.
As with all dogs, early socialization and training is the best way to get your Bloodhound off on the right paw. A positive training approach using treats is most effective, but patience is a must. Check out our upcoming classes to see which class would be the best fit for your pup!
