The Alaskan Malamute
Have you ever seen an Alaskan Malamute and thought it looked like a Husky? Well, you’re not alone! While they may look similar, the Alaskan Malamute is actually the largest and one of the oldest of the arctic dogs. Their heavy coat is perfect for guarding them against the harsh Alaskan weather.
These beautiful creatures were primarily bred to be sled dogs and can pull up to a whopping 1,000 to 3,000 pounds, depending on their training and build.
While they are incredibly strong, Alaskan Malamutes can also make a great addition to any family. However, their intelligence and independence can make training difficult. They need experienced, focused, and determined owners who can provide the training they need.
These pups also have huge energy reserves that, if not expended, can lead to negative and destructive behavior. They thrive in an environment where they can have regular exercise and access to plenty of land to run around. Our daycare services may be a good fit to help burn off a Malamute’s energy reserves.
One of the most unique things about Alaskan Malamutes is their ability to withstand even the harshest weather conditions. Their dense double fur coat is one of the beefiest of all breeds, consisting of a rough outer layer and a thick, oily undercoat that can be up to 2 inches thick and requires constant upkeep. Daily brushing and regular baths are needed to ensure the coat is kept healthy and mat free. Twice per year when Malamutes shed extra brushing is required to remove excess fur. Our grooming department is available to help you keep your Malamute looking and feeling their best!
Like their wolf cousins, Alaskan Malamutes are also big fans of howling!
