Word on the Twilight Bark is that January is National Train Your Dog Month, and rumor has it that All About Dogs is introducing new classes in 2018 to celebrate it. It sounds like it could be a fun bonding time with my person and use up some of my energy…However… I’m not convinced. I mean, I’m fuzzy, I’m cute, and I’m a master at giving the puppy dog eyes to get away with stuff. So, what’s in it for me?
Well, they made me go to school, tricked me really by saying we were going to go for a ride. Don’t think I won’t remember this when it’s cold and snowy outside and I have to go potty!
Sigh… So, I had my first day of school. I was scared. I was nervous. I was happy. There was just so much to take in! I had to sniff like every inch of the class room. Overall, it’s going well and yes, it’s really kinda fun. I’m learning to be more confident and assured. I think my person enjoys showing me off too, I can feel it running down through my leash.
I met some very nice other pups in class, although we’re not there to play with each other, its nice to be around my kind and learn together. Some are real show offs, give me time, I’ll have my person up to that level in no time. We’re learning quickly on how to read and communicate with each other, it makes us both feel kind of special to have this time together and working like a team.
Sometimes they want me to do something new that I don’t know. Now this is where it gets interesting because it can turn into a game of charades before we figure out what we’re trying to learn. If they were a little quicker sometimes with giving me my treat I would probably excel at this game and could learn some handy tricks in record time. If we stick to it, we’ll get quicker at learning new behaviors and tricks. It’s really fun once we get started!
I get treats when I do something that my person asks me! What’s almost as good as treats is when my person gets happy and excited that I did what they asked me! I love to hear the happiness in their tone! I feel closer to them because of that.
I learned that my leash isn’t for pulling my person around on or for me to chew. I was really bummed by this, but the teacher wouldn’t let us walk if I was pulling. Meanie. My person should just learn to keep up with me! Problem solved! But, whatever, the less I pull the further we get to walk, so I’m pretty sure I’m winning here.
Sit, down, stay, paw, yeah, yeah, kids stuff. These get boring after a while, but they make my person happy. Sometimes I look at them blankly when they ask me to do one of these, its funny to see how much they’ll go through to get me to âlistenâ. Ha! Listen, now there’s a good word! I don’t know English, so how can I listen to you when I don’t know what that means!?
I’ve trained other people to pet me when I sit and stare at them. They can’t resist me when I do that! This way is getting me much more attention then when I was jumping on them and asking for attention that way. Four on the floor means more and more pets for me!
Overall, this schooling thing is more fun then I thought! I look forward to heading off to school because it’s very rewarding in many ways, and after all that learning time I’m dog gone tired! I think my person is really learning a lot from it too! Wait until I call this in to the Twilight Bark tonight!
