There are two ways of thinking when it comes to dogs in clothes: some owners love to dress up their dog in sweaters, boots, hair ribbons, Halloween costumes…and their dogs are just as into it. Others think dressing up a dog is weird and eccentric. The truth is, some dogs actually need the warmth, while others have enough fur to protect them in even the most extreme conditions.
Short-haired breeds such as chihuahuas , greyhounds and poodles may shiver when outside in cold weather, or even in a cold house. If you see them trying to curl up to conserve warmth, that is a good sign that they may need a sweater. Older dogs and dogs with weakened immune systems are also susceptible. Some breeds, such as St. Bernards and huskies, are built for winter weather. Their fur is thick and protective, shielding them from cold and snow. These dogs could actually become overheated in a coat.
